Subaru Makes Plans for New STI Models
Stronger. Faster. More Powerful. We can’t help that we love cars that turn the chore of a daily drive into a day at the track, and when particular favorites get a sport-tuned injection, the excitement is really dialed up.
The Subaru Tecnica International division is looking a little sparse and has been restricted for the most part to only tinkering around with the WRX STI and of course the rally cars. But now, the restraints have been somewhat lifted as Subaru makes plans for new STI models.
Of those plans, there are two North American vehicle models that will be getting the performance boost–the Legacy and the BRZ. (Although the Outback does share the same platform as the Legacy, it will not be in the running to become an STI vehicle.)
Does STI mean more turbos? You bet!
What will power the Subaru Legacy STI is still to be determined, but according to STI boss Yoshio Hirakawa, there is a possibility of a turbocharged version of the 2.5L flat-four currently housed within the Legacy.

The second vehicle has been suggested and even begged for by many Subaru fans, and that is an STI version of the BRZ. The peppy little sports coupe already is a thrill to drive for an affordable price, but now it will really turn up the fun with the hopes of an all-new electric-turbocharger. There isn’t exactly much space to work with beneath the hood of the BRZ, and so this would be a perfect compact solution, but as of right now, state-of-the-art technology like this is still under consideration and hasn’t been give the go for production as of yet.

The third and final Subaru model that will be getting an STI injection isn’t a US model, but does share the same build as the WRX. This would be the Levorg which is produced for Europe and Japan’s markets. The Subaru WRX STI has been recognized as one of the number one performance sedans here in the United States, not only because of its driving capabilities and styling, but also because it begins at such an affordable price and retains its value over the years.
